One of the main charges against standardized testing is that the tests are culturally biased. This may well be true, but the criticism raises some interesting questions. First, how would one go about creating a culturally neutral test? Second, minority students constantly have to translate culturally biased materials, why arent they able to do this when tested? In 1912, Henry Goodman, Lewis Terman and other psychologists adapted the work of Alfred Binet and created the first IQ tests. The intelligence tests were designed principally to chart innate ability and future performance. What the test really reveals, is the ability of the tester to make connections. Of course the test is bias. The entire school system is bias. Why is the test so traumatizing for Black students?
