The most important step an urban teacher can take to advance student achievement is to create a caring, inclusive, and supportive learning environment grounded in respect for cultural and intellectual diversity.
Learning is a deeply personal and deeply human endeavor. I therefore seek to be a culturally responsive and reflective practitioner, attentive to the developmental needs of diverse urban learners and mindful of my changing responsibilities as a leader, listener, advisor, and advocate. My approach to effective classroom practice combines standards-based instruction, clear learning targets, formative assessment, engaging content connected to students’ lives, dialogic and cooperative learning, regular feedback, high expectations, and meaningful opportunities for success.
